Do you have a marketplace plan with government assistance? Here are the new 2025 rules you need to know.
Many people don’t realize it, but the rules have changed for 2025.
If you, like many of the clients I work with, have health insurance through the marketplace with financial help from the government (what some call “Obamacare”), this is for you.
1. No Taxes, No Renewal
If you receive a tax credit, the first thing you should know is this:
You won’t be able to renew your plan unless you’ve filed your 2024 taxes.
In the past, some people reported lower income to qualify for more subsidies. But this year, the government will verify your income before giving you any help.
I’ll always be honest with you:
If your taxes aren’t filed, you won’t qualify.
So the best thing you can do is get caught up as soon as possible.
2. You Need Your Own Marketplace Account
This year, every person must have their own account on the health insurance marketplace (either Healthcare.gov or your state’s portal). This protects you and your personal information.
I’m telling you from experience: having your own account gives you full control and prevents any other agent from switching your plan without your permission.
If you don’t have one yet, message me—I’ll help you set it up myself.
3. Goodbye Rescue Plan: $0 Premiums Are Over
During the pandemic, there was an extra subsidy that brought many people’s premiums down to $0. That benefit no longer exists.
For example, if you currently earn $20,000 a year and don’t pay anything for your plan, get ready:
Starting in November, you might pay between $75 and $85 per month.
Don’t panic—you can still get help.
It’ll just be more accurate and verified now.
What Can You Do Starting Today?
-
Check if you’ve filed your 2024 taxes
-
Create your marketplace account (I can help)
-
Schedule a personalized consultation and let’s see if you qualify for a different plan
Don’t wait until November to figure it all out.
These new rules aren’t bad if you’re properly guided. In fact, this year could be an opportunity to adjust your plan, better understand your benefits, and make sure you and your family stay protected.
