How Do You Know What Type of Life Insurance Your Family Needs?
One of the questions I receive most often is: “Yasmin, what type of life insurance do I need?”
And my answer almost always surprises people.
Before we talk about a policy, an insurance company, or a specific product, I first need to understand your story.
Many people believe that all life insurance policies work the same way. They think it is simply a matter of choosing the most affordable option or purchasing the policy someone else recommended.
But the reality is very different.
The best life insurance policy is not necessarily the cheapest or the most expensive. It is the one that truly protects your family based on their needs, goals, and current stage of life.
That is why, before making a decision, I want to share the key factors I always review with my clients.
Start by Understanding What You Want to Protect
The first question I always ask is: What do you want to protect?
Perhaps your greatest concern is making sure your family can keep their home if something happens to you.
Maybe you want to secure your children’s education.
You may also own a business and want to protect your partners or ensure the company can continue operating in your absence.
Each goal requires a different strategy.
Before discussing the type of insurance you need, we must first understand what matters most to your family.
Every Family Has Different Needs
Every family has a different financial situation.
A young couple without children does not need the same type of protection as a family raising three young children.
The needs of someone who has already paid off their home are also different from those of someone who still has twenty years remaining on their mortgage.
Your income, responsibilities, and future plans are unique.
That is exactly why your strategy should be unique as well.
I never recommend copying someone else’s life insurance policy.
What works for another person may not be the right choice for you.
There Are Different Types of Life Insurance
One of the most common mistakes people make is believing that there is only one type of life insurance.
In reality, there are several options, and each one is designed to support different goals.
For example, some people need protection for a specific period of time, while others prefer a strategy that can also build cash value for the future.
You do not need to memorize the name of every available product.
What matters is understanding which option best aligns with your needs.
Price Should Not Be the Only Factor
Many people begin by asking how much life insurance costs.
Although your budget is important, that should not be the first question you ask.
The real question is:
What would happen to your family if you were no longer here tomorrow?
Once you answer that question, you begin to understand that this decision is about much more than the cost of a monthly premium.
It is about protecting the financial stability of the people you love most.
Think About the Future, Too
Life insurance can do more than provide a death benefit.
Depending on the type of policy you choose and how it is structured, it may also help you work toward other financial goals.
That is why I look beyond your immediate needs. I also consider the goals you want to achieve ten, twenty, or even thirty years from now.
The right strategy should be able to grow and evolve with you.
Do Not Choose a Product Before Creating a Strategy
This is probably the most important advice I can give you.
Never start with the product.
Start with your plan.
First, understand what you want to protect.
Identify what your family needs.
Define the goals you want to accomplish.
Only then should you choose the financial tool that best supports those objectives.
Life insurance should not be purchased on impulse.
It should be part of a carefully designed financial strategy.
The Best Decision Is the One That Fits Your Reality
Throughout my career, I have learned that there is no single life insurance policy that is perfect for everyone.
There is, however, a suitable policy for each individual.
One that protects your family.
One that fits your budget.
One that supports your goals.
And one that gives you the peace of mind of knowing that, no matter what happens, the people you love most will be protected.
